Clarity is liberating

If I want to the source, I have to swim against the current.
At the source, everything is simple.
At the source there is unity.
At the source there is also clarity, and clarity is liberating.

I believe that for escaping from the swamp everyone must pull himself up.
I believe that for escaping from the swamp everyone can pull himself up.
There is a force which carries every living being. It has the sound of silence.
Therefore I practice Reiki.

From 2006 to 2014 I regularly gave Reiki treatments, Reiki lectures and Reiki seminars. Due to time constraints, offers can currently only be made on request.

Traditional Japanese Reiki in the lineage Usui - Hayashi - Yamaguchi • Usui Reiki Ryoho • Jikiden Reiki

Reiki is a spiritual practice for improvement of mind and body. According to the legend founder Mikao Usui was searching for a tool helping to change what could be changed and helping to accept what could not be changed (the recipe for a happy life).

Reiki is not invasive. Harmful side effects are unknown. It supports the self healing capabilities, is deeply relaxing and indeed the most natural form of meditation. Everybody can learn Reiki, and the Reiki practice does require neither belief nor specific brainwork. Reiki is tolerance instead of dogma and autonomy instead of sectarian dependency.

Reiki is practiced at the First degree, the Second degree, and the Third degree (divided into Assistant Teacher and Teacher level), with each level having a defined scope of practice.

At the core of the training, and unique to this practice, is a series of initiations, also called empowerments or attunements, which are believed to connect the student to primordial consciousness, the intelligence that permeates creation, maintaining life-sustaining functions and directing complex cellular processes, and which is the source of subtle Reiki vibration. This connection is then available at any time, regardless the student's health, mental state or intention.

Self-treatment is viewed as the foundational practice for all levels. 1 hour per day is recommended. Because of the deep relaxing effects for many practitioners this hour already became a kind of ritual. Reiki practice is considered selfrevealing, and students are not taught Reiki as much as they are taught how to learn Reiki. Initiation at each level marks the beginning of study at that level, not the culmination of learning.

Why I teach Jikiden Reiki

Jikiden Reiki
Jikiden Reiki

In the west the original context in which Reiki was taught in Japan has gone largely lost. The symbols and initiation rituals are not the same Usui Sensei and Hayashi Sensei have used. There is lack of clarity about the origin of the symbols and their clearly defined application.

Perhaps the changes and the exclusion of certain techniques in the West have even been necessary to enable millions of people from another culture have access to this tool. There are quite useful techniques which have been added. We should be grateful to Hawayo Takata for this move.

The success of the Western Reiki seems to confirm that the modifications applied did not hurt the system; at least this applies to the schools that have adhered to the contents of the Western or Takata Reiki. Undoubtedly this is related to the great importance of focus and intention, the core of every ritual and every symbol. Finally, it does not matter whether e.g. I write »Love« or I write »Amor«. What matters is that I can read the word and understand what it means.

For many years of Reiki practice, regardless of the merits and achievements through the regular Western Reiki treatments I kept wondering about the original context, the Usui Reiki Ryoho. I wanted a deeper understanding and more clarity. Finally it is clarity which is liberating!

There were stories about the Usui society (Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai), teaching Reiki in Japan today as in ancient times, but it was and is almost impossible to become a member. The rules of the society are also strict and clear that no member shall publicly teach Reiki.

By the year 2000 the Japanese Reiki family of the Yamaguchis became known in the West. Chiyoko Yamaguchi was taught the Usui Reiki Ryoho by Chujiro Hayashi, she became Shihan (teacher), and after the death of Chujiro Hayashi she decided to teach Reiki in public. After leaving the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai Chujiro Hayashi had also taught in public over many years.

Chiyoko Yamaguchi called her Reiki Jikiden, which means direct teaching.

With Chiyoko Yamaguchi's son Tadao I have learned the first and second degree in the Usui Reiki Ryoho in 2008. In spring 2011 I graduated to teacher level (Shihan), and so I can offer Reiki 1 Shoden and Reiki 2 Okuden, to further spread the direct and original teachings.

I think the time is ripe in the West for the original Reiki. I am deeply convinced that the Usui Reiki Ryoho healing art deserves to be passed on unchanged in all its mystery.

Shoden means beginner level. In Shoden you learn the Reiki selft-treatment and how to treat another person. With this workshop you have the opportunity to learn the beginner degree as taught by Mikao Usui and Chujiro Hayashi. You will experience Reiki in its original beauty: pure, simple and effective.

In the course you get a thourough overview of the Reiki philosophy and the historical background. We look in detail into the life of every representative in the Jikiden Reiki lineage (the direct transmitted, the authentic Japanese Teaching): the founder Mikao Usui, the researcher and physician Chujiro Hayashi and the Yamaguchi family with Wasaburo Sugano, uncle of Chiyoko Yamaguchi and coordinator for Dr. Hayashi's Seminars. Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921-2003), the mother of Tadao Yamaguchi, learned Reiki in 1938 from Chujiro Hayashi sensei. Because Jikiden Reiki has not gone through Mrs. Takata it is not westernized.

You get an insight into the Japanese culture and Japanese Buddhism, where it is relevant to Reiki. We deal with the background of specific Japanese syllables and phrases related to the teaching.

You will learn the 5 Reiki Principles (Gokai) and how living these principles enhances happiness and peace of mind. We review the notes of Usui Sensei (Kokai Denju).

You will receive the original form of the initiation into Reiki or attunement (Reiju). With a single such ritual you will get permanent access to Reiki for the rest of your life, however during Shoden you will receive it 3x. The attunement focuses on Tamashi, which is the seat of the soul. Reiju literally means »to recall the inherent power of the soul«, the spiritual power of the universe, to connect with the divine.

You learn techniques for enhancing the sensitivity in your hands, and how to apply Reiki in cases of emergency.

Then we go in detail into the Byosen concept, which describes the accumulation of waste products and toxins in the body. Usui considered the five Reiki principles and the understanding of Byosen the most important aspects of the beginner level.

You get an overview of the different types of symbols used in Japan and you learn the first Shirushi (which is a symbol that is drawn by hand). The first Shirushi has its origin in Shintoism and it serves the sole purpose of dissolving Byosen. In the West only the early students of Mrs. Takata have learned the first Shirushi.

In group treatments, as a practitioner you learn to sense Byosen, as a receiver you can observe and enjoy the effects of Reiki onto your body and mind. You also learn Kekko, a massage-like treatment taught by Mikao Usui and further enhanced by Chujiro Hayashi because of his medical training. Dr. Hayashi was very fond of this technique as it supports the blood circulation and helps in the removal Byosen. Kekko is the typical completion of a Reiki treatment.

The duration of the seminar is 2-3 days. Handouts are provided. At the end of the workshop you will receive a certificate. After the course, regular self-treatments or mutual treatments are recommended, preferably daily.

Course fees: Group rate per person 360 CHF (repeat CHF 210), individual class 950 CHF plus external costs if applicable.

Okuden Seminar • Reiki Class Second Degree • Jikiden Reiki

Okuden - Second Degree Inner Teachings - Jikiden Reiki - Usui Reiki Ryoho

  • 2x Reiju, the traditional attunement to Reiki as passed down from Usui and Hayashi Sensei
  • Types of symbols
  • Buddhist background
  • Concepts of body, mind and soul in Japan
  • Reiki Kokan (exchange) - a candle ceremony introduced by Chujiro Hayashi
  • Bad habit treatment
    • The second Shirushi (Symbol) - origin, meaning and application
    • The Kotodama (Mantra)
  • Distant treatment
    • The Enkaku Jumon (set formula) - origin, meaning and application
  • Handover of certificates
  • Practicals
    • Recite the Gokai
    • Reiki Mawashi (circulating practice)
    • Reiki Okuri (sending Reiki in a circle from palm to palm without touch, sensitization exercise)
    • Bad habit treatment
    • Distant treatment

Prerequisite: Shoden course with a teacher who has been approved by the Jikiden Reiki Institute.

Okuden is the inner degree in Reiki. Okuden is about treating the mind or psychological issues and also treating an absent person over distance. After Shoden Usui expected a good development of a student, and that the student could clearly determine and understand the Byosen. Then this student was allowed to learn Okuden.

During the seminar you will receive Reiju, the original form of Reiki attunement, for 2x more times.

To better understand the context of the advanced techniques, we make a further digression into Buddhism, Tantric Buddhism.

You learn the second Shirushi (symbol) in its original form, which stems from a Siddham style Sanskrit syllable and which is also drawn with the hands, and an associated multi-line mantra. You are shown how to use these to treat bad habits or, in other words, do a mental treatment. Later the participants practice the treatment method on each other. It is also shown how to use the second Shirushi in case of physical complaints. This is an experience of Mrs. Yamaguchi. Dr. Hayashi did not teach that.

A candle ceremony follows, which was introduced by Chujiro Hayashi. We discuss the Japanese concept of Tamashi (soul) - mind - body.

Another seminar focus is the Reiki treatment of an absent person. For this you get the original form of a jumon which is made up of five Kanji that are jammed into one another. This is done with precision and deep knowledge of the subtleties of the Japanese language and forms a different kind of symbol, similar to a formula that will be drawn and spoken at the same time. The students then practice the distant treatment technique on each other.

The duration of the seminar is 1-2 days. At the end of the workshop you will receive a certificate. After the course, regular self-treatments or mutual treatments remain recommended, preferably daily.

Course fees: Group rate per person 640 CHF (repeat CHF 140), individual class 950 CHF plus external costs if applicable.

  • Given Jikiden Reiki treatments on a minimum of 40 people for a total of at least 120 hours (keep list with details, submit a few case studies of their treatments)
  • Submitted a short essay about the reasons you want to become a Shihan Kaku and what you would like to do in the future

On a more personal note, you should have a strong desire to promote the use of Jikiden Reiki throughout the World and strive to live according to the 5 principles.

Certified Shihan Kaku (assistant teachers) have the right to:

  • Hold Shoden seminars at the same cost to participants as the seminars held at the Jikiden Reiki Institute
  • Hold Reiju Kai - attunement sessions, workshops and demonstration sessions
  • Purchase a copy of »Gokai no Sho« - a scroll depicting the five principles of Reiki - written by Hayashi Sensei using beautiful calligraphy - and photographs of Usui Sensei and Hayashi Sensei
  • Apply for the Shihan Training Course

Reiki for Kids (from 6 to appr. 12 years old)

Logo Reiki 4 Kids

Children have a particularly natural comprehension of Reiki. Where adults have a hard time to understand, kids enrich the world with pragmatic insights and a filial impartiality. In plain terms they show us that intellectual knowledge is not necessary for the effectiveness of Reiki.

Most frequently »Reiki Kids« report that they easier fall asleep and also have better sleep with Reiki, that it helps in times of nervousness e.g. at school, or fear, and when there is sudden arising pain. Perhaps the most important experience for kids is to no longer feel helpless with Reiki, whatever might happen.

It is an exciting experience for both parents and children, if the own children may treat the adults, an unusual role, in which both sides experience deep confidence and devotion.

During the class in simple ways the content of the Shoden First Degree is shown. The kids learn how Reiki works and how they can use it. They receive Reiju 3x, the attunement to Reiki, i.e. they can practice Reiki for the whole life. Among other things they learn the self-treatment, later how to treat another kid from the group, also how to treat animals and plants.

The classes take place upon request. As a prerequisite for participation at least one parent should have Reiki, and the child should want to have it. The kids should bring along their personal colored pencils, paper, a blanket, pillow and a snack for the lunch break. The seminar takes 2 half days, including longer breaks.

Reiju Kai • Attunement Sessions • Jikiden Reiki

Reiju Kai - Attunement Session - Jikiden Reiki - Usui Reiki Ryoho

  • Reiju, the traditional attunement to Reiki as passed down from Usui and Hayashi Sensei
  • Review of parts of the Shoden class
  • Group treatments
  • Reiki Kokan (exchange) - a candle ceremony introduced by Chujiro Hayashi
  • Sensitization exercises

This gathering is for Jikiden Reiki students only.

Mikao Usui and Hayashi have offered their students repeating Reiju and review sessions. The Reiki attunement has been given again. Individual seminar topics have been deepened.

The Jikiden Reiki Institute continues this tradition. Although it is not necessary for a student to »refresh« the initiation, especially if he uses Reiki regularly. Nevertheless, the repeated receiving of Reiju is an enrichment that enhances one's relationship to the Reiki energy.

During the meeting, we will do group treatments, share experiences and discuss questions. Finally, a candle ceremony is performed, which was introduced by Chujiro Hayashi (Reiki Kokan).

To participate in this gathering you must have completed at least the Shoden class with a certified Jikiden Reiki teacher.

Reiki Treatments

Sorry, but since 2014 I do not offer Reiki Treatments anymore.

How do I find my Reiki teacher?

A Reiki teacher should give Reiki unaltered and not mixed with any other stuff. Indeed I feel this is his most important task. Reiki itself is a complete system and does not need any additives. Reiki is an oral teaching, so the teacher should have a Reiki family tree to show how Reiki has come to him or her, starting from Mikao Usui.

The person interested in Reiki should have a good feeling with the teacher. For this lectures without obligation are quite useful. The Reiki community is very colorful, and the way Reiki is explained varies from seminar to seminar. Reiki is differently described in Japan, compared to India or Australia. In its essence it always stays the same, and the deep understanding will come with the own treatments. Reiki teachers are human and neither healers nor mystical gurus. Reiki is just simple, and after the 2-days-seminar nobody ever in his life has to see his teacher again.
